Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul – Duel of the Fates (Salsa Version)

Song: “Duel of the Fates” by John Williams

May the 4th be with you!

Our most popular video last year by far was our Star Wars salsa video that we made in celebration of Star Wars Day, so in keeping with Hollywood tradition we had to make a sequel!

For this year’s video, we flipped the script with Alyssa playing the Sith (a female version of Darth Maul) and myself playing Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This was one of the original ideas we discussed for last year’s video, so it was great bringing this concept to life, especially with the upcoming Disney+ series on Obi-Wan making it more timely.

We weren’t able to find any salsa versions of Star Wars music to use this year, like we did with last year’s song by Salsón, so we choreographed the routine to the original score, “Duel of the Fates” by John Williams.

For the backdrop for this year’s video we decided to go full green screen and use the setting from Obi-Wan & Darth Maul’s original battle from the Phantom Menace on Naboo.

We were able to rent out a green scren studio right here in San Jose as well as utilizing a portable green screen we bought off Amazon (see my Instagram post for some BTS footage).

Shooting was a lot easier than shooting in a desert like last year, but we spent a lot more time in post-production. Alyssa spent many hours removing the characters from the original movie shots, and we spent many hours and long nights getting the footage to look right.

We hope you enjoy the final result! This was our first foray into green screens, and something we may explore further in future projects!
