good environment, good mix of skill levels… almost all people are respectful of boundaries and can take no for an answer. I really liked it when i lived there i would go every week.
Jeremy’s style of breaking down a dance move for a group class of beginner or intermediate dancers is quite effective. (The Palomar is central to Santa Cruz with so many other options to easily explore – dining, beach, concert, book stores, or movies.) The ballroom is on the second floor of a hotel from the roaring twenties; the first floor and what used to be the lobby of the old hotel is an always weekend crowded Mexican restaurant, so you need to go up two flights of stairs or an elevator just as you enter the old Hotel Palomar from Pacific Ave. to get to the decorative and fairly spacious ballroom. The Friday night DJ plays a good mix of fast and slow salsa/bachata to the approval of a usual full floor of dancers.
I’m originally from Mexico City and lived in New York for about three years. I missed dancing to really great tunes from Dj La Conga on vinyl.
I live in Monterrey and it’s kind of far to go to SF to dance Salsa and I found that the dj at Palomar that has the set of JBL speakers (dj omambo) really has the best music I’ve heard in the bay area — aside from an Asian gentleman that wears glasses in San Francisco.
I’ve seen him play at Monterrey a couple of times and one time at the beach.
I haven’t seen him in a while, but he has really good stuff!!!
