On1 classes taught by World Salsa Champion Carolyn Barreno at Dance Vita Ballroom in San Mateo. The evening starts with a beginner lesson at 8pm, followed by an intermediate lesson at 9pm. No experience necessary for the beginner lesson. No partner needed. Discounts available when purchasing a package.

Carolyn’s offers class for beginners and more experienced. She always offers a different challenge and an opportunity to improve your technique. Other dancers are social and kind, the community at the studio is great. Carolyn teaches something different every week and often asks for students input and what the students want to learn. She makes an effort to learn everyone’s name and include all students actively. She is always offering feedback and tips to become a better dancer. I love this class and the studio. I always come by when I’m in town.
I’ve been taking salsa lessons with Carolyn for almost a year now and encourage everyone to try her class! She is very welcoming to newcomers and creates a fun atmosphere each week. You will always see familiar faces, so there is a great class camaraderie as you develop your salsa skills from week to week.
She is especially helpful breaking down proper technique for each move she teaches. We all really enjoy that Carolyn rotates through partners with the class, so we get 1-on-1 feedback as well.
I’m looking forward to taking more classes with Carolyn, maybe one day there will be an advanced section too… If you are interested in other dances she also teaches (and competes in) American Rhythm!
I took Carolyn’s salsa and ballroom lessons for 2 years. They are just great. The way how Carolyn explains a structure of a dance is highly analytical and she always goes into fundamentals if you are willing to follow her. She always encourage you to improve a foundation you have, connection you establish with a partner and other principle things rather than to learn and forget in a week some fancy pattern. That doesn’t mean, that you don’t find fancy patterns at her lessons though, you do. But she is a true teacher and know where is a right emphasis should be. She answers a question behind a question, always generously gives you more than you asked and brings the best from her experience to you. Carolyn is highly oriented towards your personal abilities and current progress and stays with you at your personal level patiently building a foundation for you to step forward. And it’s never boring! She shares a lot of her natural fun and charm with students and cares about an individual of any level in a group.
Carolyn Salsa class is s blast. She is an outstanding teacher! In Carolyn’s Salsa classes at Dance Vita we have students that come from far away to take her classes regularly. They tell me they’ve tried other Salsa classes close to their homes but Carolyn’s class is by far the best. I’ve been dancing with Carolyn both privately and in her Salsa classes at Dance Vita for almost a year now. I had never danced Salsa before and thanks to Carolyn and her classes I absolutely LOVE Salsa. All of her students adore her and we are all learning so much! I have recommended Carolyn’s classes along with her private instruction numerous times to friends and we all agree, Carolyn is terrific!
Carolyn is an exceptional instructor. She is a professional dancer that loves teaching salsa. This manifest itself in her energetic attitude and her attention to her students. She tailors her classes to the level of the students. She always focuses on proper technique. During rotations she gives feedback to individual students and increases the challenge for more advanced students.
I have ballroom dance experience, but new to salsa and social dancing. My goal has been to learn how to be a better lead in social dancing. I have gone to Carolyn’s classes for over a year, from beginner salsa to intermediate salsa, and I have gotten something out of them each time. I love her classes because I see true improvement in myself. I have made friends with my fellow students (from complete beginners to experienced social dancers) and we all agree she is an excellent instructor.

Carolyn’s group classes are fun and challenging! If your a beginner her classes are a great place to start and if your an experienced beginner or intermediate she teaches the finer points that will make you a better leader or follower. I actually found Carolyn on this website because I was looking for private lessons in San Mateo, where I live. She teaches in San Francisco as well. When I started taking group classes with her I soon felt like I belonged to a special community. Carolyn cares very much for her students and is always looking for ways to enhance our journey to become the best dancer we can be.
Carolyn is a fantastic dance teacher. I have been taking salsa with her for just about a year now. I had never danced salsa before but Carolyn makes everyone feel welcome. She is encouraging, positive, and her bubbly personality ensures that each class is filled with laughter. Carolyn focuses on technique and always provides examples of how to practice at home. I have come to love Salsa and look forward to classes every week. Highly recommend!
Carolyn is just amazing! I’ve been taking her classes since about 4 months and I love it. I was a complete salsa beginner when I started and I have seen so much improvement in my dancing over that time, it is really motivating.
Carolyn has so much knowledge that she always loves to share. She teaches her classes highly energized and has great humor. She always adapts the steps to the level of the people that are present so everyone can follow. She teaches basics, small details and body action so you really know what to do.
I took other ballroom and latin “crash courses” before but no other teacher was as motivating and competent as her.

Classes with Carolyn are awesome! If you’re looking for a fun and relaxed environment to learn, this is it! Carolyn really helps you in technique and breaks down each movement/step in a manner that is easy to understand and remember. She pays attention to each student and provides individual feedback that helps you become a better dancer. You don’t feel like you’re just another student in class. She’s one of my favorite dancers and instructors in the Bay Area since I moved here a few years ago. Both SF and San Mateo studios are big and have ample space to dance or practice without getting in anyone else’s way too.
Carolyn is an amazing teacher. I have been taking lessons with her for over a year and love it. I went to Dancevita for a beginner salsa drop in class and was hooked! I now look forward to my Wednesdays!
Carolyn is always positive, vibrant and gives feedback to improve your dancing. She breaks down the steps making it easier to follow and gives individual attention when you struggle. She also teaches proper technique to build a good foundation. Her classes are a lot of fun.

My salsa has improved tremendously since going to Carolyn’s classes. She’s very enthusiastic about teaching, the patterns she teaches are some of the most challenging I’ve encountered and she breaks them down in detail very nicely. The amount of technique you will learn is unique to this class.
She also has a cheerfully positive attitude and the lessons are enjoyable. There are regular students that you can practice and improve with. I would highly recommend going to this class to improve your salsa and have fun!
