This is an interesting mix. I have yet to see a lesson so I think the information here is outdated.
Downstairs: They is often a band downstairs in front of the bar and the floor is terrible, and not much room to dance, but people manage to dance and have fun anyway. The band’s so far have been very good. More Cuban than salsa. Think Buena Vista Social Club.
Upstairs: DJ and dancing. There is another bar, chairs, and a side room with a good dance floor. It’s empty until about 10:30 p.m. at which time it starts to fill up. I guess people in Berkeley don’t have to work in the mornings. The DJ is at the top of the stairs & a lot of dancing happens in front of the DJ, but not such a good floor for spinning (raised spanish tile).
The DJ plays standards, I think he has basically downloaded the Pandora Salsa playlist, LOL. It’s fun though, a big Latin crowd and some good dancing. Oh and it’s free!
This is a great spot for the Berkeley college crowd: heavily attended and pleasant atmosphere. However, this is not a dance club. The “dance floor” is minimal in size and not designed for serious dancers….there just isn’t enough room . This is no fault of the current establishment. It’s just the way the location was originally designed. It’s a Berkeley landmark as far as buildings go.
This is a fun free spot to get out and dance and here Latin music live until about 11 pm then DJ starts and varies from salsa, merengue, bachata and reggaeton increasing after midnight sometimes. There is one room upstairs with a wood floor and downstairs it is tile but danceable… Very cool to dance on tiny floor with band next to you. Not Salseros, more people who love to dance and socialize. Young Berkeley students for most part and nice Latino mix. Kinda replaced the Down Low as a midweek spot. I hope Studio 1924 in downtown Oakland takes off so we have a new spot on Wednesday in the Eastbay!
Sorry but this place shut down and the site has a or lease sign on it! Why are so many salsa clubs closed or closing? Get out and dance to keep our community strong…
