Cafe Cocomo Closing Pushed Back To August

Posted July 16, 2014 by

Cafe Cocomo Not Dead Yet

Last month we reported that the closing date of Cafe Cocomo was pushed back from the end of June to the end of July. Today we have received word that Cafe Cocomo will now be open until the end of August, and possibly later.

Cafe Cocomo is one of the most historic salsa venues in the Bay Area, known for its weekly live music salsa events. Earlier this year it was announced that Cafe Cocomo had been sold, and the historic venue will eventually be closed and torn down to be replaced by condos for housing-starved San Francisco residents. However, the exact date looks like it is still up in the air.

This is good news for dancers who enjoy dancing at Cocomo, but bad news for promoters who have organized new salsa events in the City, who had been counting on Cocomo closing to bring them traffic.

One such event is Yerba Buena @ Verdi Club, which was started by the organizers of the popular Yerba Buena Social Club event. The event was designed to appeal to Yerba Buena regulars as well as casual dancers, with an emphasis on bachata as well as salsa. The fate of the event is now uncertain, as it must now compete with the popular Thursday nights at Cocomos.

Another event that was hoping to cash in on Cocomo closing is Roccapulco Salsa Thursdays. Roccapulco is one of the longest running salsa venues in SF, although it has been declining in popularity in recent years. Roccapulco was hoping to revive their popularity with a new Thursday event featuring live music, with a full line-up of musicians throughout the month of July. However, if Cocomo remains open, it is unclear whether there will be enough dancers in SF for two live music events on a Thursday night.

Stay tuned for the final closing date for Cocomo, and follow us on Facebook to keep up with the latest updates.

There is nothing uncertain about the fate of Yerba Buena @ the Verdi. We will stay open for as long as it takes. The venue is closed for July 24th due to a private function and will be open again on July 31st.
