Albert Torres, Influential Salsa Promoter, Passes Away at 60


Albert Torres, one of salsa dancing’s most influential figures and a legendary promoter, passed away on May 25, 2017. He was 60.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Torres grew up immersed in Puerto Rican culture, sparking his lifelong passion for salsa music and dance. After overcoming personal struggles, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began his career promoting salsa events and soon became a key figure in the global salsa community.

Torres was known internationally as a dancer, choreographer, and event organizer. His credits include choreographing Hollywood films like “The Mambo Kings” and “Dance With Me,” and performing alongside stars such as Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Lopez. His spirited and energetic dance style captured audiences worldwide.

In 1998, Torres organized the first Los Angeles Salsa Congress, transforming the landscape of salsa dancing by bringing together dancers from around the globe. This event became the blueprint for hundreds of salsa congresses worldwide. Albert Torres Productions grew to include major events across multiple continents, further solidifying his legacy as salsa’s foremost ambassador.

Despite his busy schedule, Torres remained dedicated to promoting salsa music, supporting dancers, and mentoring the next generation of salsa artists. His passion for salsa, especially its power to unify diverse cultures, inspired countless individuals.
