Guajirón is a San Francisco orchestra founded in 2023, performing Cuban son, salsa, bolero, guaracha and tropical jazz. Its repertoire combines original compositions with arrangements of Cuban classics for concert audiences and salsa dancers.
Musical direction
The band is led by Michael Terkowski, a tres player, composer, arranger and dancer. As musical and artistic director, he writes original music and arrangements for the ensemble. His experience with Cuban dance informs the band’s approach to rhythm and phrasing.
Terkowski’s musical background includes jazz guitar studies in San Francisco and work with musicians in Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. The band’s official biography describes his studies of son, casino and danzón with Jorge Luna of Santiago All Stars, along with his exploration of the tres cubano and changüí traditions in Cuba.
Performances in the Bay Area
Guajirón performs at music venues, salsa dance nights, cultural festivals and community events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Its past appearances include La Peña Cultural Center, Ashkenaz, Valencia LIVE and neighborhood festivals.
