Omambo Dance Project Ends Performance Teams

Omambo Dance Project

Omar Muñoz, the founder and director of the Omambo Dance Project, announced today that he has decided to end the team after 7 years in operation.

Founded in 2013 in Los Angeles, Omambo Dance Project quickly grew to become one of the top competitive dance teams in the world.

Omar drew on his experience as the former director of Alma Latina USA and pulled together local dance talent from teams such as MG Dance Company to create a formidable competitive salsa team. The team won back-to-back championships at the World Latin Dance Cup in 2014 and 2015 and performed at congresses around the world.

In addition to the competition team, Omambo also started a number of amateur and semi-pro teams to train up-and-coming dancers. Omambo also helped to grow the on2 salsa dance community in LA. Los Angeles has long been known for on1 dancers, but Omambo was one of the teams in LA that helped to grow the community of on2 dancers in SoCal.

Omambo also created a satellite team in Japan (Omambo Japan Project & Omambo Japan Ladies), spreading their dance style overseas.

Omambo has consistently been one of the top competitive salsa dance teams in the US, along with The New York Movement on the East Coast, and it will be interesting to see what competitive salsa dance teams emerger post-pandemic.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTORS
It has been our honor to represent LA and the West Coast in our dance community the past 7 years. With heavy hearts we have decided to end the Omambo Teams.
Thank you to our past and present team members, students, supporters, admin team, teachers, costume designers, shoe sponsors, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, promoters, DJ’s, studio owners, and colleagues we have worked with along the way.
We are proud of what we accomplished together with our teams and will be sharing final performance videos as we shift our focus to coaching and choreography.
Thank you for all of the support and unforgettable memories made throughout our journey. We wish our dance scene safety, health, and resilience going into 2021 and we’ll be cheering you on.
Omambo Family Forever,
Omar Munoz & Amelia Beniquez Munoz
