We’ve created our first NFT!
NFTs or non-fungible tokens, if you’re not aware, are a way of creating unique digital assets that are stored on a blockchain. Rather than bits and bytes, which are infinitely replicable, NFTs allow for the creation of unique digital items which can be owned.
For our first project we created an NFT of our first salsa meme which we first posted back in February of 2012 (back when our site was called salsabythebay.com).
The meme went on to become viral on Facebook, getting shared thousands of times and reaching over a million people.
It is as far as we know the most viral salsa dancing related meme ever, and has inspired us to make many more salsa memes since (although none has reached quite the level of our first one).
We minted the NFT on OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace, on the Ethereum blockchain. Given current Ethereum gas prices it cost over $300 to mint the NFT, but we are pricing it quite reasonably at 0.2 ETH. If you are interested in purchasing it, head over to the listing.
NFTs are still a new medium for artistic expression, so we are still learning more about it and looking for new projects we can create using this technology. There are many graphic NFTs out there as well as music, but so far the performing arts are still underrepresented.
